Bomb - WW1 Austro-Hungarian 40kg Wollersdorf (Set of 4)

Comprising: Four historically accurate scale models in high-resolution, unpainted, 3D-printed resin. Available in your choice of 1/32, 1/48, or 1/72 scale.

History: This medium-weight, general-purpose aerial bomb was produced by the Munitionsfabrik Wöllersdorf near Vienna. Developed to provide a standardized heavier demolition bomb for the expanding Luftfahrtruppen bomber and reconnaissance units, its steel body was filled with Trotyl and Dynammon.

The weapon featured a lead Bleikappe (nose cap) designed to prevent premature shattering on impact and ensure reliable detonation against hard targets. It was employed against troop concentrations, rail infrastructure, depots, and fortified positions—classified in contemporary tactical doctrine as gegen feste Ziele (against fixed targets)—along the Italian and Eastern fronts. The W.B. 40 effectively filled the operational gap between lighter tactical bombs (10 to 25kg) and the larger 50kg and 100kg types.

Operational Use: Documented from 1916 onward as Austro-Hungarian air units increasingly conducted systematic bombing raids, this munition supported ground operations and strategic attacks against rear-area targets. Typically carried on external racks beneath two-seat reconnaissance aircraft and multi-engine bombers, aircraft types documented to have carried the W.B. 40 include the Albatros B.I and C.I (Oeffag); Aviatik B.I and C.I (Berg); Hansa-Brandenburg C.I and G.I; Lohner B.I and C.I; and the UFAG C.I.
