History: These hand-dropped munitions were simply lifted from the cockpit and thrown overboard by early aviators. The steel body contained 340 steel balls and an explosive charge of trinitrotoluene (TNT), while the specialized spindle detonator could be safely stowed during transport. Initial aerial testing for the design was conducted aboard a Royal Naval Air Service Short Bros. S.38 (Serial No. 34).
Operational Use: Hale bombs were also utilized by the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force. Documented to have equipped several aircraft, they were paired with types including the Armstrong Whitworth F.K.3; Avro 504; Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2; Short Bros. S.38 and Admiralty Type 184; and the Sopwith Admiralty Type 807. They were also likely carried aboard early reconnaissance types such as the Blériot XI and various Farman makes before mechanical bomb racks and heavier ordnance became standardized.
