Bomb - WW1 British 40lb Phosphorus Incendiary (Set of 4)

Comprising: Four historically accurate scale models in high-resolution, unpainted, 3D-printed resin. Available in your choice of 1/32, 1/48, or 1/72 scale.

History: White-phosphorus munitions were primarily used by British and American forces during the Great War. Aerial bombs for smoke-generating and anti-personnel roles came into use during the second half of the war, with the first 40lb phosphorus bombs arriving at the Western Front in the summer of 1916.

Before the advent of incendiary machine-gun ammunition, the 40lb phosphorus bomb—officially designated as the T.W. 40lbs Mk I/L Type A and Mk II/L Type B—was intended mainly for attacking airships and observation "kite" balloons. Its variable-time fuze, used with a C.F.S. bomb sight, enabled it to detonate at a calculated height above a target, showering it with burning phosphorus over a 250-meter-wide circle. These phosphorus lumps could flame for about 1,000 feet as they fell. As the war progressed, its role developed into more conventional purposes, including ground marking and tactical smoke screens.

Operational Use: Documented to have equipped several aircraft, including the Airco D.H.4 (including the U.S.-operated "Liberty Plane"); Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8; Bristol Braemar and F.2B Fighter; Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b and R.E.8; and the Sopwith F.1 Camel.
