History: This light-case, high-explosive aerial bomb was introduced in 1915 by Britain’s Royal Laboratory. Made of mild steel, it was used by the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service and RAF through the latter half of WW1. Because it was engineered primarily for horizontal external stowage or flat internal bomb-bay tracking, it became a mainstay munition for early tactical bombing wings and coastal anti-submarine patrols.
Operational Use: Deployed by light bombers such as the A.D. Flying Boat (and Supermarine Channel conversions); Airco DH.4; Martinsyde Elephant; Blackburn Seaplane Type L; Fairey Hamble Baby (and Parnall-built variants); Farman HH.27; Handley Page O/100 and O/400; Port Victoria P.V.1 and P.V.5 / P.V.5a; Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8; Sage Type 3; Short Admiralty Types 184 and 827; Short Bros. Admiralty Type 184, Type 224 Bomber, and N.2B; and Sopwith's 1 1/2 Strutter (including French-licensed production), Baby, F.1 Camel (Tondern Raid variant), and Schneider.
