Bomb - WW1 Italian 240mm Granata Torpedine (Set of 4)

History: During the Great War, the Servizio Aeronautico della Regia Marina employed bombing primarily in support of sea control. Air raids conducted before and during naval patrols, or in response to reconnaissance sightings, used light bombs to disrupt Austro-Hungarian naval activity, particularly around the ports of Pola, Trieste, and Cattaro.

Among the largest of these weapons was the Granata Torpedine da mm 240/67, developed from a 240mm projectile weighing 67 kg. Originally utilized against fortifications, its aerial version carried a large high-explosive charge. This bomb was deployed extensively against U-boats and their bases, as well as fortified positions, railway facilities, bridges, and supply depots. The first type appeared following Italy's entry into the war and remained in service until the Armistice, despite the gradual introduction of improved versions from 1916.

Operational Use: Suspended individually on release gear, the bomb delivered exceptional power capable of demolishing field fortifications and concrete shelters. Its effectiveness and psychological impact were offset by its considerable weight, limiting aircraft to carrying only a few bombs per sortie, with accuracy limited by the technology of the period. Period photographs indicate these bombs were typically carried externally beneath the wings or fuselage. Aircraft types documented to have equipped these bombs include Caproni heavy-bomber variants and seaplanes operating from coastal bases and seaplane tenders—namely FBA Types C, H, and S.
