Bomb - WW1 British 16lb H.E.R.L. Light Case Mk.I (Set of 8)

Comprising: Eight historically accurate scale models in high-resolution, unpainted, 3D-printed resin. One decal sheet included. Available in your choice of 1/32, 1/48, or 1/72 scale.

History: These hand-thrown, high-explosive bombs were designed by Britain's Royal Laboratory on the south bank of the River Thames in Woolwich, and were in use from late 1914 through early 1916. They were filled with TNT and typically delivered to the front loaded in wooden cases in sets of six with separately packed detonators, exploders, and strikers.

This weapon was systematically phased out of frontline land-based service in favor of the more effective 20lb Hale and 20lb Cooper fragmentation bombs, though it briefly persisted in maritime operations with the Royal Naval Air Service. On December 21, 1914, four RNAS Shorthorns launched the first naval night-bombing raid of the war, dropping exactly eighteen 16 lb H.E.R.L. bombs on German coastal artillery positions near Ostend, Belgium.

Operational Use: Documented to have equipped several aircraft, primarily for the Royal Naval Air Service, including the Airco D.H.4; Avro 504 (early variants); Blackburn Seaplane Type L; Blériot XI; Bristol Scout; Curtiss H-4 "Small America"; Fairey Hamble Baby; Farman HF.20, MF.11, and MF.11bis; Morane-Saulnier Type L; Nieuport 17; Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2a and B.E.2b; Short Bros. Admiralty Type 184; and the Sopwith Baby, Admiralty Type 807 "Folder," F.1 Camel, and Schneider.
